10 millionth BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series is one of the main models of the BMW lineup. Designed in the 1970s, the 3 Series was designed as a smaller, more fuel-efficient luxury car in response to the rising costs of fuel. On September 9th, the 10 millionth sedan bearing the historic nameplate rolled off of the assembly line at BMW Group Plant Munich. The milestone car is a BMW 320d in Imperial Blue.

It is very special that this particular milestone was reached in 2015, because this year is the 40th anniversary of the BMW 3 Series’ debut in the auto world. After years of engineering and testing, the BMW 3 Series first went on sale in June of 1975, and since then has seen six generations of updates like new body styles, the addition of an infotainment system, and more fuel-efficient engines.

BMW Group Plant Munich builds about 1,000 cars a day, and half of them are in the BMW 3 Series. The plant’s team is very proud to have built the milestone sedan, as it is the only BMW facility that has built all six generations of the BMW 3 Series through the years. Over 14 million BMW 3 Series vehicles in total have been built, but the sedan is by far the most popular body style.
