The old adage “do what you like and you’ll never work another day in your life” may be a bit of a cliché, but it’s one that rings true for Adam Martin. He found his calling in life early on when he met and fell in love with “Lucy”—a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro.

As a teenage pizza-maker earning $8-10 per hour in 1990s Minnesota, Adam scraped together enough cash to buy the beater, but he soon found that restoring it required a lot more time and money. To figure out how to do the labor himself, he took an auto shop class in high school, and then took a full-time garage position after he graduated.

When he heard about a school’s auto restoration program, Adam ended up making the decision to go to college, which is one of the ways Lucy truly changed his life.
