An Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system will come standard on almost all new models by 2022

Last year in September, we got news that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had gotten some pretty major auto manufacturers to agree to make automatic braking systems standard on all new vehicles in the near future.

Well, it looks like the NHTSA and IIHS have been hard at work, because now the number of carmakers that have agreed to this number has reached 20.

Oh, and they’re all going to do it by 2022.

Affordable Luxury: Learn about the luxurious Mitsubishi Outlander GT

While each of the automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, there is one overarching similarity—they will help save a huge number of lives. In fact, according to the IIHS, AEB systems can potentially reduce the number of rear-end collisions in America by 40%. Yes, you read that right—40%!

Numbers like that are enough to convince anyone to make these innovative safety systems standard.

The list of carmakers that have agreed to make these systems standard consist of 99% of the new car market in the US. It includes Mitsubishi, BMW, Toyota, Honda, General Motors, Ford, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, the Volkswagen Group, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, Jaguar-Land Rover, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Volvo, Tesla, Subaru, Nissan, and Mazda.

This lengthy, lengthy list of carmakers means that every single car buyer in 2022—regardless of his or her budget—will be able to benefit from AEB. It’s not just available on the luxury vehicles anymore.

As the NHTSA points out, this is a truly historic moment in the automotive industry. Soon, AEB systems will become as normal as brake lights—and we can’t wait.
