Mazda closed out what was already a prosperous 2013 with a 2.5 percent overall sales increase, marking the automaker’s best year since 2007. 2013 Mazda sales totaled 283,947 units overall, and while Mazda’s December sales slid 15.7 percent when compared to 2012, it still amounted to the second-best December for Mazda since 2007.

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) also made it a point to release its retail-only sales for 2013 in order to tout its 262,970 sales figure, which is good for a 16.1 percent increase over 2012 and the best retail-only sales year since Mazda’s banner year of 1994. It was twenty years ago when Mazda’s retail sales totaled 310,985 and established the automaker as a formidable force in the United States automotive market.

With 2014 just beginning, Mazda is enjoying a boom in popularity spurred on by the overwhelming success of the Mazda3, which enjoyed its second-best year of sales since 2010 in moving 104,713 units in 2013. The all-new 2014 Mazda3 was recently named a finalist for the 2014 North American Car of the Year award, which will be awarded in a week’s time at the 2014 North American International Auto Show. Mazda is looking to sell 500,000 Mazda3 units globally in order to hit its annual sales goal of 1.7 million vehicles; Mazda has yet to report its cumulative global sales for 2013.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY vehicles accounted for 79 percent of December sales and 70 percent of all 2013 Mazda sales. The SKYACTIV®-capable Mazda6 enjoyed an overall sales increase of 29.3 percent over 2012 and its best year of sales since 2008 in addition to its best December sales month since 2007. The Mazda6’s December sales improved upon its 2012 figure by 215.4 percent.

With another year in the books, 2013 Mazda sales indicate a continued interest in the automaker that is likely to carry it to continued success in 2014.
