Every now and then, a carmaker will stray from their usual design path, adding a car to their lineup that isn’t characteristic of their brand. For Scion, this car is the 2013 FR-S. With the intention of appealing more to younger buyers, this low-slung sports car is bringing sexy to Scion, with a sleek body and chiseled lines that give the impression this coupe is a panther waiting to pounce.

2013 Scion FR-S Performance
A 2.0-liter horizontally opposed “boxer” four-cylinder engine that churns out a robust 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque powers each Scion FR-S. It comes standard with rear-wheel-drive and either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters and rev-matched downshifts. The FR-S also comes standard with something not normally seen in its segment—a traction-enhancing mechanical limited-slip differential.

Fuel economy for the 2013 FR-S comes in at an EPA-estimated 28 mpg combined for the automatic and 25 combined for the manual.

The cabin of the brand-new FR-S puts the driving experience in the forefront, with easy-to-read gauges and simple controls. The front seats emphasize the driving-focus with enough support to hug you when you take sharp corners, yet plenty of comfort for long road trips. There isn’t much room in the backseat for adult-sized passengers, but more likely than not you’ll be too focused on the fun of driving the FR-S to really care.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the FR-S its highest possible score of “Good” in frontal offset, side, and roof strength tests. Standard safety features include antilock brakes with brake assist, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags.
