The Toyota Matrix is a sporty four-door hatchback and the Japanese’s first attempt at a CUV, or crossover utility vehicle. The L base model comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels and heated mirrors while the upgraded S trim level will add fog lights.

If you’re looking to deck out your Matrix, the optional L sport package includes front and rear spoilers as well as fog lights, and the premium S sport package bundles the L package with 17-inch alloy wheels.

2013 Toyota Matrix Performance

The entry-level L model is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that pumps out 132 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission comes standard, while a four-speed automatic is available as an option.

EPA fuel economy estimates are 25 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined with the automatic transmission, and 26 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined with the manual, impressive numbers for a crossover.

The Toyota Matrix uses solid materials, has straightforward well-placard controls, and plenty of in-cabin space. The rear seats fold flat for an impressive 49.4 cubic feet of cargo room, and the front passenger seat can also fold flat allowing space for long items.

The 2013 Toyota Matrix comes standard with antilock disc brakes, active front head restraints, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Matrix the highest possible overall rating of “Good”.
