2014 Chevy Spark EV the Most Fuel Efficient Vehicle You Can Buy in the U.S.Hate spending upwards of $50 every time you hit the pumps? You might consider looking into a more fuel-efficient option, and while that doesn’t necessarily mean giving up your large SUV, it does mean looking into alternative fuel sources, like a hybrid or electric model. However, your best bet is to downsize and go electric. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) agrees, as it recently named the 2014 Chevy Spark EV the most fuel efficient vehicle currently sold here in the States.

So what does it take to earn such a distinction? A combined city and highway 119 mpgE rating, that’s what. More specifically, this baby gets 128 mpgE in the city and 109 on the highway, with an estimated electric range of 82 miles, depending on driving habits. (And yes, that beats out the LEAF’s range by quite a bit.)

But the Spark EV wasn’t Chevy’s only winner on the DOE’s top ten list. The Chevrolet Volt sat comfortably at number seven, yielding 62 MPGe on average. The Volt is a great choice for those of us not lucky enough to live in California and Oregon, where the Spark EV is currently sold.

It’s a telling fact that the DOE’s top seven vehicles were all electric, and eight through ten are plug-in electrics. Could electric power be the way we’re headed? If efficiency, fatter wallets, and conservation of resources are things we care about, then it certainly should be.
