Chris Forsberg capped off the 2014 Formula Drift season—a season in which he set a record with five consecutive podium finishes—by winning the 2014 Formula Drift Championship in the final race of the year at Irwindale Speedway.

It’s rather appropriate, given that Forsberg has raced in every single Formula D event in all 11 years of its existence. Surely, the run to this year’s championship was one for the books.

Forsberg and his No. 64 Nissan 370Z NISMO came into the race at “The House of Drift” with a slim lead over newcomer Aasbo. Both advanced out of the Great Eight and into the Final Four, and it was Aasbo who came out victorious.

In order to win the title, however, Aasbo had to win outright over Daigo Saito, who had won the final at Irwindale the previous two years. 2014 would prove no different, as Saito won the event; after a gut-churning wait for the judges’ deliberation, Forsberg was announced the 2014 Formula Drift Champion by what can be described as a fraction of a follicle.

“No words can describe what it feels to win a championship in Formula Drift. It’s the absolutely pinnacle of drifting series in the world,” said Forsberg. “To put a Nissan-powered Nissan back on the podium is amazing. We won it back in 2009. Since then, we’ve had a few close calls the last two years with a third and a second. Taking number one spot, nothing beats it.”

We’re pretty sure the only way it could have been a better day for Forsberg would have been if he had won the final race…or if he didn’t have to wait so long to hear that he had been named champion. Somehow, we suspect he will take it.
