The 2014 Kia Soul made the list of best back-to-school cars

The Kia Soul made headlines earlier this year when it was chosen to transport Pope Francis during his visit to Korea. According to a new list from Kelley Blue Book of the 10 Best Back-to-School cars, the Soul is a good fit for both the Supreme Leader of the Catholic Church, and a college student looking for a new set of wheels to impress his fellow sophomores.

In this year’s rankings, KBB gave high marks to cars that possessed both “practicality and affordability,” while also awarding extra credit “for style, features and personality.”

In their recommendation of the Soul, KBB wrote, “The redesigned-for-2014 Soul is loaded with personality, yet at its core is wonderfully practical. The fuel-efficient hatchback seats five and has the cargo volume to ace a trip to IKEA for dorm room furniture.”

Kia Motors America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, Michael Sprague, said in a statement, “Since its launch in 2009, the Soul has appealed to a broad range of customers thanks to its unique blend of style, technology and value. Now in its second generation, the iconic Soul remains true to its roots while improved refinement, features and amenities continue to exceed customer expectations for the segment.”

The 2014 Soul was ranked second only to the first-place 2015 Honda Fit, and scored 9.6 out of 10 possible points in its KBB.com consumer rating. It utilizes a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 130 hp and gets 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The Soul has a Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price of $14,623.
