Endurance races are becoming increasingly popular across the globe; many of them lasting 24 hours of straight racing.  The National Auto Sport Association (NASA) wanted the record for the longest endurance race in America, so they bumped it up an hour and created the US Air Force 25 Hours of Thunderhill.  The race is headline-worthy by itself, but when a “nearly-stock” 2014 Mazda6 finishes among the top three, it steals the show.

The Japanese automaker entered three 2014 Mazda6 SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel cars into the race with very little mechanical modifications, and all enhancements that did take place were done by Mazda volunteers in their free time on nights and weekends.

“Mazda is a small company, but what has always stood us apart from our competition is that we are a car company full of real car people,” said Robert Davis, Mazda North America Senior Vice President, in a press release.  “These people spend their weekdays working with cars professionally, just to spend the weekend working with cars as their hobby.”

The three Mazda6’s competed alongside 70 other vehicles across six classes, and one managed to finish in the top three in the highly competitive E1 Class.

Would knowing that you’re buying essentially the same vehicle that is able to finish among the best in the world in endurance races be motivation to make a purchase like the 2014 Mazda6 SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel?
