The 2014 Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S has earned the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick award.

A famed poet once said: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” We can’t source it with any certainty, although historians claim it may have been a time-traveling David Lee Roth. In any case, the sentiment is translatable to the safety of the Toyota GT-86, otherwise known as the Subaru BRZ, otherwise known as the Scion FR-S. While each model features its own unique little touches, one thing remains consistent among the platform-sharing vehicles: they are all worthy of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick distinction. Well, the GT-86 not so much since it’s not offered in America, but were it that it was, you bet it’d be a Top Safety Pick!

2014 Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S The 2014 BRZ/FR-S is largely unchanged from the 2013 model year, meaning that the crash test scores for that model carries over and remains the status quo. The 2014 BRZ/FR-S scores an “acceptable” rating in small front overlap and “good” scores for moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints & seats. Given how few changes are being made with the 2015 models, it’s reasonable to expect that those will also earn the IIHS’ top rating.

The Top Safety Pick distinction is particularly important for Subaru, giving them more Top Safety Picks than any other automaker with seven. As it stands, the 2015 BRZ, Impreza, WRX/STI, and XV Crosstrek have all earned TSP honors; the 2015 Legacy, Outback, and Forester have all been honored with the Top Safety Pick+ when equipped with Subaru’s EyeSight® technology.

“We are very pleased that BRZ has joined our other Top Safety Pick models” said Thomas J. Doll, president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. “BRZ proves that it is possible to engineer a car that provides both driving enjoyment and safety.”
