A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine powers the Passat TDI, producing 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque on SE and SEL models. Either a six-speed manual or six-speed automated manual transmissions, also known as the DSG, are options for the transmission. With its diesel powertrain, the TDI is able to reach 60 mph from a standstill in 8.9 seconds.

Antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags are all standard safety features for the 2014 Passat TDI. Also, an onboard computer automatically cuts off the fuel supply, unlocks the doors, and turns on the hazard flashers in the event of a car crash.
