The 2014 Women’s World Car of the Year winners have been announced, with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class named Luxury Car of the Year, and the overall Car of the Year. It was a hard-fought journey for the S-Class, though, as this year’s voting produced the closest results in the five-year history of Women’s World Car of the Year. Twenty-three female automotive journalists from fourteen different countries judged the entrants on ten different criteria: design, function, style, appeal, comfort, storage, drive quality, the “wow” factor, value-for-money, and even sex appeal. The latter three categories were considered especially relevant to women car buyers.

Many of the 2014 Women’s World Car of the Year awards competitions were very close: the VW Golf Variant/Sportsvan was just barely beaten out by the Audi A3 for the title of Family Car of the Year, while the BMW M4 was narrowly surpassed by the Audi S3 for Sports Car of the Year. The closest call came in the SUV of the Year competition, which saw the Range Rover Sport topping the Porsche Macan.
The battle for the Luxury Car of the Year title produced another crowded field of competitors, but ultimately the Mercedes-Benz S-Class finished above the Audi A8 and the Tesla Model S (in that order).

“There was considerable discussion among the judges earlier this year about our voting format and cars on the short list,” said Sandy Myhre, the founder of Women’s World Car of the Year. “The winning car companies can be justifiably proud of their achievement because it is very hard to get on the short list and to win a category, let alone the supreme trophy.”
That supreme trophy – a ceramic plate with hand-painted inscriptions – ultimately went to the S-Class, which inherits the title from last year’s victor, the Ford Fiesta 1.0-liter EcoBoost.
Other 2014 Women’s World Car of the Year awards went to the Honda Jazz/Fit, for Economy Car of the Year, and the Tesla Model S, for Green Car of the Year.
Just for fun, the female journalists were asked to nominate and then vote on their ultimate “dream cars.” The winner? A Jaguar F-type coupe.
