Customers of the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 sedan can rest assured that they are driving quality vehicles off dealership lots. That’s because the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant’s (SHAP) brand spankin’ new Quality Assurance Center houses hundreds of 2015 Chrysler 200 quality tests performed on randomly selected models each day.

The measurements and audits performed cover over 400 different vehicle functions, like emissions, heating, and cooling. The Quality Assurance Center is even home to a material laboratory with an on-site chemist.

“We’re confident the 2015 Chrysler 200 will make a strong first impression with customers,” commented Doug Betts, Senior Vice President, Quality, Chrysler Group LLC. “The all-new sedan benefits from a significantly enhanced quality process at the plant that’s part of our commitment to World Class Manufacturing. Quality and customer satisfaction are part of everyone’s job.”

Before the first 200 sedans were even built almost a year and a half ago, team leaders at SHAP created around 3,500 quality controls for the assembly process to prevent any issues from occurring. Even so, Chrysler upped the number of dedicated quality inspectors from 22 to 50—just to be extra sure they are producing a quality product.

Paint quality is being assessed.

“The goal is to design each workstation so it’s impossible to make a mistake,” Betts explained. “The best expert on how to error-proof a specific assembly job is the person who does it every day – that’s why it’s so important to have all workers engaged in World Class Manufacturing.”

The Quality Assurance Center isn’t all that’s new for SHAP. There is also a metrology center that allows engineers to discover the root cause of any issues that might not be visible to the naked eye.

In addition, Chrysler employs a Perceived Quality Team that works to improve the fit-and-finish, as well as surface quality, material options, and sound quality of various moving parts (like the doors). Chrysler has also put a fleet of 200 sedans through over 17 million miles to ensure the new model’s quality. During these tests, the 200s go through the Road Test Simulator at the Chrysler Technology Center, to see how the vehicles would fare in the toughest conditions some drivers might expose them to.
