Ford Gives Us the Score on 2015 F-150 Aerodynamics
2015 F-150 aerodynamics stack up favorably to its predecessors
Ford is really looking to drive home the point that the new 2015 F-150 is the one that pickup enthusiasts want, and they’ve employed a whole lot of superlatives in order to do so. We’re not that far off, perhaps, from a press release that declares the new F-150 to be “the most trucky truck to have ever trucked.” The latest claim being made by Ford has to do with F-150 aerodynamics, which the automaker says are—surprise—the best ever for the namebadge.
Ford says that the sharper, squared-off edges and surfaces serve a two-fold purpose: making the 2015 F-150 appear bolder and stronger, and also making it considerably more aerodynamic by pushing the air past it more efficiently.
“The truck’s sharp, boxy shape gives it a tough appearance, but actually the key to the design is aerodynamic efficiency – getting the most out of the shape,” said Brad Richards, Ford F-150 exterior design manager. “We made F-150 look tough and capable, while also reducing wind resistance.”

Facets of the redesign that help F-150 aerodynamics include everything from the beveled leading edge of the hood to the rear corners. Clay models of the F-150 were tested in wind tunnels throughout the process, and greater aerodynamic abilities were gained through:
- A flush-mounted windshield means airflow-disrupting molding is no more
- The tailgate top was designed to play the role of spoiler to disperse air better
- A cargo box that is narrower than the cab
- Angled rear corners for reduced turbulence
- A duct under the headlamps moves air into the wheel housing and cuts the wake created from the wheel
Ford incorporated all of these changes without sacrificing any of the hallmarks that make the F-150 the F-150. They are also using a new badge to help signify that this generation of F-150 is lighter and more efficient. The badge, which uses a font Ford calls Bold Leadership, will eventually end up on all F-Series trucks in the future.
