The 2015 Ford Edge has been announced as having met the qualifications necessary to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s TOP SAFETY PICK Award. The all-new Edge earned ratings of “good” in four of the five IIHS evaluations and a rating of “acceptable” in the small overlap front crash test.

Ford upgraded its door-hinge pillars starting with models built in June, improving occupant protection enough to earn it that crucial “acceptable” score in the small overlap front crash test. The 2015 model is the first iteration of the Edge to undergo the IIHS’ feared test.

The 2015 Edge performed well in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests, polishing off its TOP SAFETY PICK standing. The Edge’s optional front crash prevention system with automatic braking earned it additional points, but it was ultimately just shy of earning the vaunted TOP SAFETY PICK+.

IIHS notes that it plans to require 2016 TOP SAFETY PICK recipients to receive a “good” score in the small overlap test, necessitating further improvement for the 2016 Edge. Ford has already announced that the new Edge will feature a new advanced adaptive steering feature.
