The 2015 GMC Canyon began shipping to dealers last week, and there are plenty of reasons to be excited about it. The all-new midsize truck boasts a fair amount of segment firsts and segment bests, even now in its first year.

For example, the 2015 GMC Canyon achieves best-in-class horsepower—200 hp from the 2.5-liter I-4 and a whopping 305 hp from the 3.6-liter V6. Despite its intense power, the 2015 Canyon also boasts class-leading fuel economy numbers. The EPA has estimated the 3.6-liter two-wheel-drive models at an impressive 26 mpg on the highway. Oh, and did I mention that the Canyon also gets the segment’s best trailering rating at 7,000 lbs?

The Canyon is also the first—and only—truck in its class available with AutoTrac automatic four-wheel drive. AutoTrac actually allows drivers to select between manual four-wheel-drive engagement and automatic engagement.

“The all-new Canyon is the segment’s first premium midsize truck, delivering class-leading capabilities with the brand’s signature refinement,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing. “It’s an efficiently sized, maneuverable package for customers who want the cargo-hauling and trailering versatility of a truck without the size of a full-size pickup.”

The Canyon also boasts several segment-first driver alert safety features, like lane departure warning, forward collision alert, and, of course, a rear-vision camera. Other segment-exclusive features include standard projector-beam headlamps, active aero grille shutters, CornerStep rear bumper design, and EZ Lift-and-Lower locking tailgate.

Finally, the Canyon features the first Duralife™ brake rotors and the first electric power steering system in its class. Not bad for a newcomer, eh?
