Lincoln MKC wrap-around liftgate

The new 2015 Lincoln MKC features an innovative wrap-around liftgate.

The intention behind the design of the all-new 2015 Lincoln MKC is to allow it to stand out against the pack of the small premium utility segment. One of the most prominent features that will allow the MKC to stand apart is a wrap-around liftgate, which is the result of a massive collaborative effort between Lincoln designers and engineers.

“We’re confident we’ve created an all-new vehicle that will attract new customers to the brand while meeting the expectations of long-time Lincoln drivers,” said Dillon Blanski, MKC exterior designer, in the Lincoln Motor Company’s press release. “The execution of the new liftgate is a prime example of how a signature premium design element can create a better customer experience.”

The 2015 Lincoln MKC sports the signature split-wing grille in the front, marking it as undeniably Lincoln. It’s the presence of that hands-free liftgate in the rear, with its full-width LED tail lamps emphasizing the powerful and svelte profile of the MKC, which is sure to turn heads in dealerships this year.

The wrap-around liftgate is a holdover feature from the MKC Concept that made its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) last year, and its presence on the production model that is set to roll out this summer is owed to no small feat of manufacturing. In fact, three unique steps are required to create the uniquely-designed liftgate.

First, Amino North America Corporation of Ontario, Canada creates the single-piece exterior panel. From there, the panels are shipped to the Wayne Stamping Plant in Detroit where laser-welded inner panels are created. Hydroforming makes possible a punch-and-die process that then connects the two panels.

When all is said and done, the wrap-around liftgate weighs a mere 7 pounds; the bold side-cut design allows for uninterrupted rearview of the full-width signature Lincoln tail lamp.  The 2015 Lincoln MKC itself will be produced at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky ahead of its Q3 2014 street date.  For more information on the 2015 Lincoln MKC and its features, check back with us here at The News Wheel!
