The 2015 MX-5 picks up where the stunning 2014 model left off.

Mazda has been enjoying a considerable roll over the past twelve months with the successful top-to-bottom redesign of both its Mazda6 and Mazda3.  One of the automaker’s most popular models is undoubtedly the Miata, the two-seater roadster that has been stealing hearts for 25 years.  According to MotorTrend, the 2015 Mazda Miata will make its long-awaited debut in just a few short weeks (plus a year, give or take) at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show.

The earliest indications suggest that the 2015 Mazda Miata will have a 2,400 lb. curb weight, just a bit over its (admittedly ambitious) 2,200 goal.  This will still result in a significant weight loss when compared to the current model.

It’s also being speculated that the 2015 Mazda Miata will make use of naturally-aspirated inline-four engines in both 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter sizes.  Along with their renders of what the next-gen MX5 might look like, Car Throttle doesn’t go out on too much of a limb by assuming that the Miata will get some iteration of the 2.0-liter SKYACTIV®-G engine.

Furthermore, MotorTrend assumes for a thirty percent efficiency gain with the addition of a SKYACTIV® engine, speculating at 27 mpg city/36-37 mpg highway fuel economy for the next Miata.  It will also likely have a retractable hardtop, because it’s a Miata and it must.

The 2015 Mazda Miata, which will also share a platform with the upcoming Alfa Romeo Spider, will likely feature the same “KODO – Soul of Motion” design language that has made the Mazda3 and Mazda6 so popular with consumers.  Expect a longer wheelbase, “more muscular proportions,” and a bigger trunk.  You should also probably expect to really, really want one.  You will.  Because it’s a Miata.
