2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+
As we all remember quite well, the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander boasted its incredible safety during Super Bowl XLIX by helping a Boston pizza delivery driver protect over 200 pizzas during the industry’s busiest day of the year, and that incredible feat is now backed up by the coveted IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, proving that it is also equally capable of protecting humans.
The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander employs front- and second-row curtain airbags, front seat-mounted torso airbags, a driver knee airbag, and advanced front airbags to protect its occupants (and their pizzas) in the event of a crash. It scored a “Good” rating on every crash test, including the difficult small overlap front crash test shown in the video at the end of this article.
In order to earn the Top Safety Pick+, however, a vehicle must be able to mitigate a frontal crash on its own, and the Outlander achieves this through its available Forward Collision Mitigation System and its automatic braking system that successfully prevented a crash at 12 mph during testing.
The 2014 model also achieved the Top Safety Pick+ rating last year, so this rating is likely a carryover from last year’s crash testing since the vehicle was essentially unchanged. Watch the Outlander excel in its small overlap crash test below:
