2015 Mustang EcoBoost Loses 35 Horsepower with 87 Octane Fuel

There was a story going around back when the 2015 Ford Mustang’s power figures were being release that suggested that the EcoBoost Mustang would lose about 13% of its 310 horsepower when operating on 87 octane fuel. This would shake out to a loss of about 40 horsepower, though it was promised that the EcoBoost Mustang would retain peak torque.

According to training materials obtained by Mustang6g, the Mustang’s 2.3-liter GTDI EcoBoost engine has an output of 275 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque when using 87 octane, which indicates that the loss of horsepower if a bit less significant than what had been originally projected—11.3% lost versus the original assumed 13%–but that torque suffers a 6.25% loss.

When Jalopnik tested out the EcoBoost Mustang, they were told by Ford reps that it could run on 87 octane “all day long,” but that the loss in power was to be expected. Naturally, most drivers will want to use 93 octane to take full advantage of the EcoBoost’s power, but drivers in states like California—where 91 octane is the sole premium fuel option—and areas where the fuel is less sparse may have to make do with less.
