Compact Crazy: 2015 Porsche Macan Debuts at LA Auto Show

Even with the existence of the Porsche Cayenne, it’s hard for many to wrap their head around the idea of the Italian automaker manufacturing anything but boxy racers that win Le Mans and carry Jerry Seinfeld dutifully to get his morning coffee.  The Porsche Macan, which made its world debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, is looking to prove that the brand of power, performance, and personality indicative of the Porsche name badge comes in all shapes and sizes.

The first compact SUV from the world’s foremost sports car manufacturer, the Porsche Macan will come in two different models: the Macan S and the Macan Turbo.

The Macan S will be powered by a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 that is capable of generating 360 horsepower and climb from 0 to 6 in five seconds flat. The Macan Turbo will get a 3.6L V6 that can put down 400 horsepower and do zero to sixty in 4.4 seconds. Clearly, Porsche still has the market cornered on out-and-out ridiculousness.

Porsche Cars North America’s press release touts the Macan’s flexible interior, extra ride height, and best-in-class steering and precision. Porsche Auto Group Executive Board President Matthias Mueller says that the Porsche Macan Turbo will be the most powerful compact SUV in the world. A Porsche trumping all other vehicles in the power department? There’s something we’ve never heard before.

Both the Porsche Macan S and the Porsche Macan Turbo are scheduled to hit dealerships in the U.S. by spring 2014 and carry price tags of $49,900 and $72,300, respectively.

No word on whether the Porsche purists of the world are in hysterics over the reveal the way that they were a decade ago with the Cayenne. Perhaps the above video (and it’s head-nod-worthy soundtrack) will provide a pacifier for their cries. Because they’re babies.
