Volvo has announced that the ever-impressive XC90 will be one of the safest cars  on the road when it launches later this month, thanks in large part to two world-first innovations and the most advanced standard safety package for any vehicle on the market today.

Standard for the 2015 XC90 will be two never-before-seen technologies: a run-off road protection package and the ability to automatically brake at intersections.

According to Volvo, approximately half of all traffic deaths in the United States occur when a driver leaves the road for any reason (be it distraction, weather, or fatigue). As such, Volvo has developed Safe Positioning, which detects when a vehicle is going off road and tightens the seat belt to lock driver and passengers in place. The seat and seat frame cushions are built in order to absorb impact and reduce the possibility of spinal injuries.

Auto braking at intersections kicks in in instances where a driver turns into the path of an oncoming car, which also makes it particularly useful for merging on highways. The system will detect and imminent crash and applies the brakes to avoid or diminish the impact of a crash.

These technologies, along with other City Safety auto braking functions, Roll Stability Control, Blind Spot Information System, and Queue Assist are all a part of Volvo’s ambitious goal for the year 2020.

“These two world firsts are further examples of how new technologies target substantial real-life traffic problems. This strategy moves us closer and closer to our ambition that by 2020 no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo,” says Prof. Lotta Jakobsson, Senior Technical Specialist Safety at Volvo Cars Safety Center.
