The second generation of BMW‘s premium compact Sports Activity Vehicle has arrived and is ready for some fun in the sun. BMW has released pictures of a Mineral White metallic X1 xDrive20d (which is in desperate need of a tan) frolicking around on a sandy beach. This young member of the X family is having a blast in the photoshoot below, kicking up sand with its light-alloy wheels.

After looking at the pictures of the redesigned BMW X1, you’ll notice the biggest change is its aggressive new look–retaining its five-door design but shortening the bonnet and lengthening the roof line. This is possible due to a use of the UKL platform, using more hot-formed, high-strength steel and aluminum in the body structure.

We also like the increased interior space: 85 more liters of cargo space, 37mm more knee room in the back, 53mm increased in total height, and 36mm raised seating position driver. Load capacity can even be stretched to 1,550 liters–not bad for a compact!

Under the hood, the X1 has a traverse-layout four-cylinder engine squeezed in–a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline, plus a diesel alternative. Thanks to enhanced chassis technology and xDrive, the newest X1 supposedly reduces fuel consumption and emissions by 17%.

Entry-level models are the X1 sDrive18d and X1 sDrive20i with front-wheel drive, while upper-level four-wheel drive models are the X1 xDrive20i, X1 xDrive25i, X1 xDrive20d, and X1 xDrive25d. The extensive list of options includes Dynamic Damper Control, full-LED headlights, Head-Up Display, and Driving Assistant Plus. We mustn’t forget the best part–the newly-available M Sport Package!

The production model will be revealed to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
