2016 Chevy Cruze Boasts Better Fuel Economy than Hyundai Elantra and Mazda3
There’s no other gasoline-powered car in the compact sedan segment that provides better fuel economy than the redesigned 2016 Chevy Cruze.
The 2016 Cruze, which is Chevrolet’s best-selling car around the world, comes equipped with a direct-injected 1.4-liter Ecotec turbo engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission. The ‘16 Cruze is also approximately 250 pounds lighter than its predecessor, which helped the vehicle achieve its EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 42 mpg on the highway.

The new Cruze sedan also utilizes stop/start technology that helps with fuel efficiency in the city, as the engine will automatically shut off when the car is idle, but restarts as soon as the gas pedal is engaged. The 2016 Cruze boasts EPA-estimated fuel economy of 30 mpg in the city, which is 7% better than previous Cruze offerings.
Vehicles that the 2016 Cruze edges out in EPA-estimated fuel economy include the Hyundai Elanta, which is good for 38 mpg on the highway; as well as the Mazda3 that’s rated at 41 mpg on the highway.
“Offering a maximum highway range of up to 570 miles per tank– you can spend less time at the pump,” said Steve Majoros, director of marketing, Chevrolet Cars. “The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze has more horsepower and torque, and is lighter than the previous generation making it more fun to drive.”
It should be noted those EPA-estimated ratings of 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway apply to the L, LS, and LT trim levels of the 2016 Chevy Cruze. The highest-level Cruze Premier yields an EPA-estimated 40 mpg on the highway. Chevy also pointed out those figures are based solely on estimates provided by the EPA and that fuel economy can differ depending on individual driving habits.
Chevy will be launching a hatchback version of the Cruze later this year, but efficiency ratings have yet to be released for the new model.
