With EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 47 mpg highway and 46 mpg city, the 2016 Chevy Malibu Hybrid is now the most efficient midsize sedan on the market.

The Malibu Hybrid’s fuel economy slash line of 47/46/46 mpg in city/highway/combined driving bests that of the Ford Fusion Hybrid (44/41/42 mpg), the Kia Optima Hybrid (36/40/38 mpg), the Toyota Camry Hybrid LE (43/39/41 mpg), and the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid (42/48/44 mpg).

The 2016 Chevy Malibu Hybrid utilizes some of the plug-in Volt’s drive system components and software to provide all-electric propulsion in some driving scenarios, as well as power to assist the direct-injected 1.8-liter gasoline engine. It is also about 300 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, which contributes to its segment-topping EPA-estimated city mileage.

“The Malibu Hybrid offers outstanding fuel efficiency and integrates the latest technology to give customers a world-class hybrid,” said Chevy marketing director Steve Majoros said. “Combined with a number of available, leading safety and connectivity features, it’s a great choice for those who want exceptional efficiency with Chevrolet’s signature value.”

Priced at $28,645, the new Malibu is equipped with standard features that include a 7-inch Chevrolet MyLink touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for iPhones and Android smartphones. Ten standard airbags, a rear vision camera, cruise control, and push-button start are also offered on the new Malibu Hybrid.

The Malibu’s Teen Driver safety system, which allows parents to monitor the driving habits of their teenaged sons and daughters, is also available on the hybrid model.
