A few days ago, Chevrolet teased the upcoming 2016 Volt with a close-up photo of the car’s rear and announced that the new model would debut this fall in Detroit at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. Since then, a bit more information has come to light, the biggest take-away being that the new Chevy Volt will downsize its 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine to a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine that is similar to the one currently found in the Opel Monza Concept.

The Opel Monza’s engine burns compressed natural gas, which is not anticipated to be a fuel option in the 2016 Volt. However, the Monza’s 1.0 Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) Turbo engine provided a 20% increase in fuel efficiency when compared to the earlier model’s 1.6-liter engine. If the SIDI is placed into the Volt, it could translate to some similar improvements in the efficiency of Chevy’s plug-in hybrid-electric.

(No word yet on whether or not the 2016 Volt will also feature the same cool DeLorean-style butterfly doors that the Monza does, but we can hope.)

Sources are also reporting that the new 2016 model will now seat five, which should help endear the Volt to consumers.
