Of all safety rankings, almost none are as coveted as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+. While many automakers can point out vehicles that received scores of “Good” in five of the Institute’s crash tests and a “basic” rating in front crash prevention, receiving the title of Top Safety Pick, the addition of that “+” says to those looking at the ratings that this car not only met those conditions, but also earned an advanced or superior rating in available front crash prevention technology.

One such Top Safety Pick+ recently added to the list is the 2016 Mazda CX-3 subcompact crossover, which received top scores in each test, including earning a “superior” rating for its crash-prevention system.

On the CX-3, the system that the IIHS is awarding is part of the i-ACTIVSENSE package for Grand Touring models, which includes Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Smart City Brake Support, Smart brake Support, High Beam Control System, Lane Departure Warning System, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and automatic on/off headlights. This is in addition to the CX-3’s other available safety systems, including Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Adaptive Fron-Lighting System, Active Driving Display pop-up head-up display, and daytime running lights and taillights.

The announcement of this award comes at a very opportune time for Mazda, as the new model year of CX-3s is set to go on sale in North American beginning in July with a starting MSRP of $19,960 (and with a little feature-shuffling).
