2016 Ford F-150 Wins PickupTrucks.com Fuel Economy Challenge
The 2016 Ford F-150, powered by the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, was victorious in the PickupTrucks.com Texas Truck Showdown Max MPG fuel economy challenge. An F-150 XLT SuperCab defeated the Ram 1500 HFE 3.0-liter, Chevy Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-liter, and Toyota Tundra SR 4.6-liter in a competition that compared and contrasted the trucks in terms of acceleration, braking, and mileage.
The F-150 proved superior in 0-to-60 acceleration and quarter-mile acceleration, both empty and with a 1,500-pound payload, as well as 60-to-0 braking with 1,500-pound payload. Judges cited power and speed, fuel economy, data display, and interior comfort as the factors that put it atop the heap.
“In the end, we were impressed with the F-150 for its capability, fuel efficiency and composure when pushed hard, said Mark Williams, editor of PickupTrucks.com. “For a small V6 engine, it’s very impressive how well it almost eliminates the typical compromises half-ton customers have become accustomed to.”
Ford notes that the 2.7-liter EcoBoost and 3.5-liter EcoBoost engines combine to account for roughly 60% of all F-150 sales. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost-equipped F-150 features standard Auto Start-Stop, and in 4×2 configuration, it offers best-in-class EPA-estimated fuel economy of 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway/22 mpg combined.
