Infiniti design director Alfonso Albaisa introduces the 2016 Infiniti QX50 at the New York Auto Show

At last week’s New York Auto Show press preview, all eyes were on the Infiniti QX30 Concept as it made its North American debut. But the small crossover concept wasn’t the only thing the luxury automaker revealed in the Big Apple. We also got to catch the first glimpse of the updated 2016 Infiniti QX50, which will launch sometime next year.

For the 2016 model year, the QX50 sees new exterior styling, which includes a new rear fascia, new side sill design, new 19-inch wheel design, LED side mirror turn signals, and LED fog lights and daytime running lights. One of the biggest (literally) changes to the compact crossover for the next model year is its length—the wheelbase has been extended by 3.2 inches, which means that the interior has grown in size, with 4.3 additional inches of rear-seat legroom and an overall interior volume increase of 8.3 cubic feet.

The 2016 QX50 will keep its current engine—a 3.7-liter V6 mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. This engine is good for 325 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, and has an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Infiniti design director Alfonso Albaisa commented, “The QX50 was one of the first luxury compact crossovers, foreshadowing one of the hottest segments in the auto industry right now. It was the first vehicle to offer our innovative Around View Monitor. And it remains one of the most powerful and versatile personal crossovers you can buy. The enhancements for 2016 keep it fresh and competitive.”

The QX50 is offered with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. For 2016, it’ll come with a number of options packages that have been significantly revised for the new model year. Watch this space for more news of when to expect Infiniti’s next compact luxury crossover to land at a dealership near you.
