Mercedes has confirmed new 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class engine options

Rumor had it that everyone’s favorite world-famous German luxury brand planned to offer something new in terms of a 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class engine. Previously, the G-Class was powered by a 5.5-liter V8 (in the G550), but enthusiasts were hoping for something with a little more power—and something that was a little more efficient, as always.

Mercedes has now confirmed that a smaller but more powerful 4.0-liter V8 has been created to replace the current powerplant, starting in the 2016 G550. The automaker also confirmed that the model would be getting a more finely tuned stability control system, a new suspension setup, and some new options for the interior and exterior.

This new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, which was derived from the very engine that powers Mercedes-AMG models, packs a hefty punch, at 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. Compare that to the 5.5-liter V8, which juices out “just” 382 horsepower.

Mercedes will be keeping the 5.5-liter V8 for the G63, though it’s been fine-tuned to deliver 563 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque (up from 536 horsepower). And if you’re really hungry for power, the cream of the crop is the V-12-powered G65. This baby’s twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 offers up 621 ponies and 737 lb-ft of torque. It boasts a 0-to-60 sprint of just 5.3 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz has not yet said when the new G-Class will be available here in the States, but an announcement is expected soon.
