2016 MINI Countryman Overview

The 2016 MINI Countryman is the larger sibling of the better-known MINI Cooper. The Countryman has increased cargo space and comfortable seating for five, making it practical for a family without detracting from MINI’s fun-to-drive attitude. Available in four trim levels, including the souped-up John Cooper Works, the Countryman has something for everyone.

What’s New for the 2016 MINI Countryman?

Given that the Countryman received a fairly hefty makeover for 2015, the 2016 carries over mostly unchanged. The main difference with the new model is the addition of the Park Lane package. The package is named after one of London’s ritziest streets, and offers “Earl Grey” paint, an Oak Red roof with matching hatch and hood stripes, 18-inch dark grey wheels, Oxide Silver and Cross Stripe Grey interior accents, and Park Lane badging. The package is available on all models save the John Cooper Works.

2016 MINI Countryman Performance

The 2016 Countryman is fitted with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. This combination produces 121 horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque in the Cooper; 181 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque in the Cooper S and Cooper S All 4; and 208 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque in the John Cooper Works.

2016 MINI Countryman Efficiency

Despite its increased size, the 2016 MINI Countryman still offers decent fuel economy. The Cooper model yields 27 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined; the Cooper S is good for 26/32/29 mpg city/highway/combined; and the Cooper S All 4 and John Cooper Works each earn 25/31/27 mpg city/highway/combined.

2016 MINI Countryman Interior

Inside, the 2016 MINI Countryman is as customizable as it is outside. Choose from base or sport seats; leatherette, leather/cloth, or all-leather seats; and features like a black checkered dash surface, chrome line interior, and anthracite headliner. The rear seat offers ample room for passengers to ride comfortably, and when that seat is folded down, the Countryman boasts 42.2 cubic feet of cargo space.

2016 MINI Countryman Safety

The Countryman has all the safety features you’d expect, such as front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, driver and front-passenger knee airbags, stability control, and antilock disc brakes. Although the 2016 has not yet been assessed by the NHTSA or IIHS, the latter named the 2015 Countryman a Top Safety Pick thanks to its top-notch performance in all five crash tests—including the notoriously tricky small overlap front test.
