America’s most affordable electric vehicle, the 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV, will go on sale in the United States in March, according to Inside EVs.

It might be a surprise that a 2016 model is going on sale so early in the year, but there was no 2015 Mitsubishi i-MiEV. All of the 195 sold in the US last year were 2014 models.

The 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV starts at an MSRP of $22,995 and is eligible for a Federal tax credit of up to $7,500, which would reduce the cost to $15,495. The 2016 model receives an optional Navigation Package, Bluetooth phone system, USB port, and a rearview camera. A Level 3 DC quick charging port will also come standard, which can charge the car to 80% in less than 30 minutes.

The car will offer three driving modes that are manually selectable based on the needs of the driver. “D” mode uses 100% of available torque for maximum performance, “ECO” reduces power output slightly to conserve the battery, and “B” turns up the regenerative braking system to extend the battery life even longer.

Hopefully these added options will encourage greater sales numbers for the little EV, which sold 1,029 units in 2013 but fewer than 200 in 2014, while the Nissan LEAF remains the king of the American EV market.
