2016 Nissan Maxima Production Begins in Smyrna
2016 Nissan Maxima production began this week
Earlier this week, Nissan announced that production of the 2016 Nissan Maxima had begun at the Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna, Texas. What Nissan has branded its “4 Door Sports Car” just debuted a few weeks back at the 2015 New York International Auto Show and is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, mated to an Xtronic continuously variable transmission.

When 2016 Nissan Maxima production began this week at the plant in Smyrna, employees were joined by Randy Boyd, who is the Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commissioner; Lamar Alexander, a US Senator; and Bill Haslam, governor of Tennessee. US Senator Alexander announced his appreciation for Nissan and his enthusiasm for the new Maxima at the event: “When Nissan came to Tennessee more than 30 years ago, there were almost no auto jobs in the state. Three decades later, about one-third of our manufacturing jobs are auto related, auto suppliers have located in 80 counties, and our family incomes are higher. I want to thank Nissan for providing opportunities for thousands of talented Tennesseans.”
The Maxima is no stranger to Smyrna production. The plant there has been producing the Nissan staple since January of 2003. In that time, plant employees have manufactured nearly 800,000 Maxima sedans. Those Maximas aren’t just for those of us here in the States either; more than 60,000 of those Maximas have been shipped off to other global markets.
It’s Official: A Mercedes-Nissan Pickup Is in the Works
Nissan’s Smyrna plant also manufactures five other Nissan models, including the LEAF and the Altima, which are assembled on the same line as the Maxima. The plant opened in 1983 and currently employs more than 8,400 dedicated workers. The plant also owns the distinction of the highest-producing automotive assembly plant in North America, with more than 648,000 vehicles built in 2014 alone.
