The refreshed 2016 Toyota Avalon

The Avalon is Toyota’s flagship sedan, offering a touch more luxury than the automaker’s other sedans. Currently in its fourth generation, the mid-size sedan showed off a mid-gen refresh at the Chicago Auto Show earlier this year. After plenty of teasing, the Avalon is finally on sale at US dealers, and Toyota hopes that its improvements will make it a viable alternative to pricier premium brand sedans.

Toyota offers the 2016 Avalon in eight separate trim levels; five with regular gasoline engines, and three with hybrid engines.

What’s New for the 2016 Toyota Avalon?

The main difference in the 2016 Avalon is the introduction of two new suspensions—Touring grade and non-Touring grade. The new Touring grade suspension offers a dynamic and responsive driving experience, while the non-Touring grade suspension focuses on a high-quality and comfortable ride.

In addition, the 2016 Avalon offers new LED taillights, LED headlights and daytime running lights, and 18-inch alloy wheels with a dark-gray finish on the Touring trim. Finally, Toyota has added a new grade—XLE Plus—which is available with a gasoline or hybrid engine.

2016 Toyota Avalon Exterior

The 2016 Avalon has received an exterior makeover that includes LED lights and chrome finishes to help it stand out from other sedans. Toyota has redesigned the grille and turn signals, but the sleek shape of the Avalon remains.

The Touring model offers new 18-inch dark gray painted alloy wheels to add to the model’s sportiness, and its new sport-tuned suspension turns it into a premium sport sedan that will appeal to drivers who want a fast ride, but like the comfort and luxury of a family sedan.

2016 Toyota Avalon Performance

The 2016 Avalon carries the same engine as the 2015 model—a meaty 3.5-liter V6 that pumps out 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. This engine is standard on all five gasoline models—XLE, XLE Plus, XLE Premium, Touring, and Limited.

The three hybrid models—Hybrid XLE Plus, Hybrid XLE Premium, and Hybrid Limited—are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder DOHC engine good for 200 horsepower.
