The 2016 Toyota Prius earned a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) just put the all-new 2016 Toyota Prius through the paces before determining the fourth-generation classic hybrid should merit its top score: Top Safety Pick+.

More than Just Safe: Find out what else sets the 2016 Prius apart

The 2016 Toyota Prius nabbed this respected designation after earning the IIHS’s top score of “Good” in all five crash tests. These tests include moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. To earn the “plus” tacked onto the end of the Top Safety Pick title, the Prius also had to earn a “Superior” rating in the newly added front crash prevention technology test.

To earn that last distinction, the Prius must be outfitted with the optional Advanced Technology Package. This active safety technology package includes features such as lane departure alert with steering assist, as well as a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and several others. With this technology engaged, the Prius was able to prevent accidents at 12 miles an hour and 25 miles an hour. The IIHS noted a marked improvement in the Prius’ safety over the 2015 model.

Watch: 2016 Toyota Prius Does Small Overlap Front Test

The 2016 Toyota Prius v has also earned the Top Safety Pick+ distinction. The smaller Prius c did not receive similar high marks. Rumor has it that both models may be removed from the Prius product line, and with the introduction of the Prius Prime and the discontinuation of Toyota’s Scion brand, it’s very possible that Toyota will enact that big change as well.
