Crash tests are important, but it’s still sad to see such a beautiful vehicle get totaled

Plenty has already been said about the performance that the Alfa Romeo Giulia supplies to drivers. Far less has been said about the Giulia’s safety capabilities. As it turns out, this is another area where the Giulia excels, as the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Top Safety Pick+ is the highest honor that any vehicle can obtain from the IIHS, in terms of vehicle safety. The requirements for such an award can be demanding, but the Giulia met all of the criteria. For example, the vehicle achieved a “Good” rating in each of the IIHS crashworthiness evaluations. This is especially true for models built after May 2017, when Alfa Romeo made several major modifications to the Giulia’s safety systems. Such modifications included a restructuring of the vehicle’s front end and a reinforcement of its door hinges and head restraints. Headlight aim was also readjusted to create optical lighting conditions for the Giulia.

It lost a wheel, but it did not lose the test

The Giulia earned a “Good” rating for said readjusted headlamps. Finally, the vehicle’s Full-speed Forward Collision Warning achieved a “Superior” rating during the IIHS’ Automatic Emergency Braking tests. Full-speed Forward Collision Warning is an available option for Giulia owners, costing approximately $500. Other safety features for the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia include Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning.

“The Giulia represents the height of Alfa Romeo engineering and technology so no effort was spared when it came to the vehicle’s performance and safety features,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Alfa Romeo. “We’re honored to receive this award from IIHS as it shows our commitment to creating state-of-the-art vehicles.”
