Ford answered the question that the world had on the tip of its tongue with regards to the new 2017 Fusion: what will the cup holders be like? The answer, as it turns out, is just so incredibly fancy.

Ford utilized customer feedback to change the new Fusion’s center console in such a way that it totally changed the game for cup holders. Now, instead of having two cup holders side-by-side and parallel with the center stack, the 2017 Ford Fusion will have two cup holders side-by-side and facing the center stack. Whoa.

In all fairness, it is a fairly significant upgrade. The removal of the traditional shift knob and replacement with a rotary gear shift dial enabled the change, allowing Ford to extend the armrest by about 3 inches and making its cup holders capable of even holding those enormous 52-ounce sodas you can get in gas stations. You and your Big Gulp will look incredibly snazzy in the new Fusion, for sure.

“Being dissatisfied with your cup holders may be a minor annoyance, but it’s a daily one, which over time detracts from the overall car experience,” said Jolanta Coffey, Ford instrument panel and console manager. “On the other hand, when you like your cup holders, they can make your vehicle feel like home. For Fusion, we set out to develop a beautiful interior, paying attention to the details that make people fall in love and stay in love with their car.”

What’s more, the 2017 Fusion’s cup holders will also be available with ambient lighting. That, actually, is pretty neat.
