The 2017 Ford Fusion mid-size sedan offers an attractive exterior design, multiple powertrain options, and the latest safety features

Ford has been playing up the numerous upgrades that make the 2017 Fusion the best one yet—from the Fusion V6 Sport’s computer-controlled shock absorber system that helps mitigate damage from potholes to the Fusion Energi’s 610-mile range on a full tank and a single battery charge to the fancy, fancy, fancy new cup holders.

Now, Ford has a new, non-cup-holder-related accolade to heap upon its new Fusion: the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety TOP SAFETY PICK+.

IIHS awarded the 2017 Fusion equipped with the optional active braking system its highest accolade for safety, with the Fusion having earned ratings of “good” in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests.

These qualities alone would qualify the Fusion for the TOP SAFETY PICK, but the optional active braking system—for its ability to avoid collisions at 12 mph and 25 mph—earned a “superior” rating for crash prevention, earning it that extra + mark.

Ford anticipates that the Fusion’s modified front-end structure and optional forward collision warning will also be enough for it to earn the NHTSA 5-Star Safety Rating.

“The 2017 Ford Fusion is our most advanced car yet and we’re proud to see it recognized by NHTSA and the IIHS for its safety performance too,” said Bill Strickland, chief program engineer, Ford Motor Company. “Great new features include a pedestrian detection system and hands-free parallel and perpendicular parking capability, as well as existing optional lane-keeping assist and Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert.”
