The upcoming 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback

The tenth-generation Honda Civic lineup will continue to expand this fall, as the 2017 Civic Hatchback launches in North America, joining the sedan and coupe variants that hit the market earlier this year. The five-door hatch will be equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and will be available LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Sport Touring trims.

Most notably (for performance enthusiasts, at least), the hatchback will also serve as the basis for what Honda is calling the “radical new” Honda Civic Type R that will launch in the United States sometime next year.

The 2017 Honda Civic hatchback’s turbo engine will yield 174 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque in LX, EX, and EX-L trims, while the Sport and all-new Sport Touring grades will boast a slightly punchier 180 ponies, as well as a high-flow center-mounted exhaust.

When equipped with a CVT, Honda anticipates the hatchback will score class-leading EPA fuel economy ratings of 31/40/34 mpg in city/highway/combined traffic. No estimates are available yet for models equipped with the optional performance-inspired 6-speed manual transmission.

Size-wise, the Civic hatchback features class-leading volume and cargo capacity, with 122.9 cubic feet of interior room and 36 inches of rear seat legroom, as well as the “largest cargo carrying capacity in the competitive set.”

The new Sport Touring trim will make Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Honda Sensing safety features, and LED headlights all standard features, and also offer amenities like heated rear seats.

“The Civic Hatch has been a staple for Honda in Europe, but has long been the forbidden fruit for Honda fans in the US,” said Honda executive Jeff Conrad. “Now, we’re bringing this sporty, stylish and versatile Civic Hatchback to North America, as we amp up the performance of our incredible Civic lineup with each new Civic model.”
