What is there to say about the Hyundai Elantra sedan? With its affordable price tag, decent fuel economy, and excellent warranty, it’s a vehicle that many Americans use every day to get from point A to point B. However, it’s never been a vehicle that automotive publications have praised for being that fun to drive, but all that could soon change with the introduction of a new Sport trim for the 2017 model year.

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport will receive its motivation from a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that will produce more than 200 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque. The official Hyundai press release regarding the new Sport model did not specify exact performance figures, but the Korean version of this car is good for 204 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Furthermore, consumers who opt for the new Sport trim will have the choice of either a six-speed manual or seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) with paddle shifters.
Besides coming with a new peppy engine, the ‘17 Elantra Sport will also feature an independent multi-link rear suspension that was created to enhance its overall driving experience.
Design changes have also been made to the exterior of the new Elantra Sport, such as bolder body lines, a longer hood, and extended headlights. In addition, the cabin will now feature a pair of front sport seats, upholstery with red contrast stitching, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.
“Elantra Sport demonstrates our commitment to providing drivers with compelling vehicle choices that align with their interests,” said Mike Evanoff, Hyundai Motor America manager of product planning. “This is a vehicle that reflects our own passion for cars and driving, expressing it with sharp looks, proven in-car technology, upgraded power, and fun, sporty handling.”
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport is scheduled to hit US dealerships later this year, but Hyundai has yet to disclose pricing information for its new sedan. The 2016 Elantra Sport carried a starting MSRP of approximately $20,000, but one could assume the 2017 version would be more expensive due to all of the aforementioned upgrades.
