What’s New for the 2017 Hyundai Veloster?

Not much has changed this year from the 2016 version of the Veloster. It retains the same style and features as it previously did, with the specs remaining generally identical.

What Hyundai did add for 2017, though, is the new Value Edition trim. Slotted just above the base trim, the Veloster’s new Value Edition trim offers the more high-end (and popular) features of the decked-out Velosters at a lower price. Forgoing the top-of-the-line turbo engine, the Value Edition adds 18-inch alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, push-button start, 7-inch navigation system, automatic climate control, BlueLink, and a premium audio system.

In addition the 2017 Hyundai Veloster has three other trims: base, Turbo R-Spec, and Turbo.

The Veloster’s high-strength steel body is the basis of many of its best qualities: its unique three-door configuration, its muted road noise, its sport-tuned suspension, and its rounded hatch rear. Its wide front fascia features the brand’s now-signature grille shape and elongated, wraparound headlights. Its wheelbase stretches 104.3 inches, with total length measuring 166.1 inches and width 70.5. A short, stocky vehicle, the Veloster only stands 55 inches tall.

The Veloster is offered in eight colors, such as Vitamin C orange, Pacific Blue, 26.2 Yellow, and Ironman Silver.

2017 Hyundai Veloster Performance

You might not think that an affordable car like the Veloster can achieve any notable performance on the road, but this little hatchback benefits from brake-based torque vectoring and a 1.6-liter, Gasoline Direct Injection, Dual Overhead Cam, 16-valve, inline-4 engine with optional turbocharger. As it stands, the engine reaches an optimum 132 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 120 lb-ft of torque at 4,850 rpm. With a twin-scroll turbo, the block is energized to 201 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 lb-ft of torque at 1,750-4,000 rpm.

Both engines get either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch transmission, or seven-speed for turbo.

2017 Hyundai Veloster Efficiency

The 2017 Hyundai Veloster’s starting-level 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine achieves 27 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined with its manual transmission. When paired to the six-speed EcoShift® Dual Clutch Transmission, that same engine achieves a slightly-elevated 28 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, 31 mpg combined.

If you turbocharge the 1.6-liter engine and make it the Turbo/R-Spec trims’ version, paired to a manual transmission, the fuel economy doesn’t drop very far. It stays near 25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined.

*EPA estimates for comparison. Your actual mileage will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits, and vehicle’s condition.
