The 2017 Mitsubishi Montero Sport made its debut earlier this month at the Bangkok Auto Show

If you were hesitant about Mitsubishi’s new focus on an SUV lineup, think again. The Japanese carmaker’s new SUV, the Montero Sport—also known as the Pajero Sport—was officially revealed earlier this month at the Bangkok Auto Show after multiple teaser pictures and videos were released.

And we have to say—if this is the new face of Mitsubishi, we’re impressed.

Check out the Pajero Sport in this video:

The Montero Sport is based on the brand’s Triton (L200) pickup truck, featuring Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design in its front end and vertical lights on the SUV’s rear. The high-end finishes in the SUV’s interior makes the plushest cars seem plebian, adding three rows of seating for the practical side in us all.

So far, only one powertrain has been announced for the Montero Sport—a turbocharged 2.4-liter diesel engine with MIVEC. This powertrian, paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive, is sure to make this Mitsubishi SUV a terrific vehicle to drive.

This new SUV will be sold in Mitsubishi’s African, Australian, Latin American, Russian, South East Asian, and Middle Eastern markets. In each of these markets, it will be known by a variety of names including the Montero Sport, Pajero Sport, or Challenger.

The Montero Sport isn’t set to arrive in the United States any time soon, though it’s Montero sibling is confirmed to arrive next summer. Hopefully, the Sport model will join Mitsubishi’s US lineup sometime soon.
