The new Touring trim for the 2017 Outback offers the choice between two engines: the 2.5-liter four-cylinder is good for 175 horsepower while the 3.6-liter six-cylinder lays out 256 hp. The Outback Touring sits on 18-inch wheels with dark gray accents—to match the dark gray grille—and a machined finish. The exterior is also marked by low-profile roof rails (silver finish) and lower cladding and Outback badging in chrome. Exclusive to the Touring trim is the available Brilliant Brown exterior color.

The Brilliant Brown pairs quite nicely with the interior Java Brown implemented in all Outback Touring models. The Java Brown makes its way onto the perforated leather-trimmed upholstery, as well as the door panels and the armrests with contrasting ivory stitching. The interior is also marked by a heated steering wheel, piano-black switch panel accents, and a woodgrain interior finish. Drivers will benefit from a SUBARU STARLINK 7-inch Multimedia Navigation system, which includes voice-activated controls and three years of complimentary map updates and a 3-year complimentary subscription to SiriusXM Traffic® and Travel Link®, as well as SiriusXM All Access audio service.

That STARLINK system also includes a one-year trial of the Safety Plus package, which includes Automatic Collision Notification, Diagnostics Alerts, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Maintenance Notifications, Monthly Vehicle Health Report, and SOS Emergency Assistance.

Furthering the safety of the Outback is Reverse Automatic Braking, which debuts on the Outback model line. Four ultrasonic sonar sensors work to prevent collisions while the driver is reversing. This system can ultimately stop the vehicle to prevent a collision if it is clear the driver will not. Safety is also improved via the EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, and Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. These are paired with Subaru’s new High Beam Assist.

The 2017 Subaru Outback Touring may be the brand’s “new flagship model,” but the 2017 Subaru Legacy is also an impressive option. Powered by a 2.5-liter boxer engine mated with a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission, the Legacy Sport delivers 175 hp and features a manual model and paddle shifters. Despite its raw power, the Legacy maintains high levels of efficiency, with an EPA-estimated combined rating of 29 miles per gallon.

The Sport trim’s styling definitely lives up to its name. The Legacy’s sportiness is enhanced by the Sport trim’s dark gray front grille, 18-inch sport-styled wheels, and gloss black housings for the fog lights. Other new exterior features include high luster silver-finished turn-signal mirrors and chrome-accented rocker trim.

Inside, the 2017 Legacy Sport features a carbon fiber pattern dash and door panel trim, with piano-black steering wheel switches and door switch panels. The interior also boasts a two-tone pairing of black and gray cloth upholstery, completed with blue stitching on the steering wheel, door panels, and seats.
