2017 Toyota Corolla Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Extra Safety and Features

Given the ridiculous amount of Corollas that Toyota has managed to sell over the years, it’s almost surprising that it has only been around for 50 of them. Since 1966, Toyota has sold 43 million Corollas around the world and that number continues to grow at a steady rate—at such a rate, in fact, that customer continue to buy it more than any other vehicle in the world, every year.
Such a feat wouldn’t be possible if Toyota weren’t constantly updating the Corolla to meet the changing needs of those automotive consumers—and for the 2017 model year, that meant a big focus on safety.
The 2017 Toyota Corolla comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) technology, a suite of safety tech that includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Automatic High Beams.
Toyota aims to add TSS-P to all of the cars in its lineup by 2022, and making it standard on the Corolla—of which it sells approximately 1.5 million each year—is a big step toward boosting overall safety on the road for everyone; you could argue it’s the biggest step possible.
Extra safety features won’t be the only change. The 2017 model is also poised to be the most-efficient Corolla ever thanks to a new Eco trim that combines a smarter CVT transmission with aerodynamic features to achieve superior fuel economy. Somehow it’s also the most powerful in the lineup, with 140 horsepower coming out of a tuned 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine.
As the cherry on top of the cake, Toyota is also launching a Corolla SE 50th Anniversary Edition that celebrates the car’s important milestone. It’ll come standard with a seven-inch touchscreen and Entune Audio Plus with Connected Navigation, along with other cool technologies and various exterior and interior eye candy.
One thing is for sure: the Corolla is unlikely to relinquish its title of best-selling automobile in the world for a very, very long time.
