What’s New for the 2018 Chevrolet Express Cargo?

For 2018, Chevrolet is giving the Express Cargo a new base engine/transmission combination, of a 4.3-liter V6 engine connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the older 4.8-liter V8 powerplant. Then, the Express Cargo will be getting an optional 6.0-liter V8 engine that is both gasoline- and CNG/LPG-capable.

Additionally, the 2018 Express Cargo gets a number of newly standard features, including a rearview mirror with integrated Rear Vision Camera and OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and some newly available features like Side Blind Zone Alert and Hill Start Assist.

Finally, Chevy is adding a number of optional packages, including the Cargo Package, Safety Package, Communications Package, and Enhanced Convenience Package.

2018 Chevrolet Express Cargo Exterior

On the outside, the Express Cargo continues its minimalist approach to being a work vehicle, with the minimum of fuss put into body panel sculpting. The Express Cargo is, however, available in two wheelbases (regular and extended), and can be fitted with doors and windows on both sides in addition to the rear.

2018 Chevrolet Express Cargo Performance

The 2018 Express Cargo can be equipped with one of three engines.

The first of these is the new base 4.3-liter V6, which puts out 276 hp and 298 lb-ft of torque. Joining this in novelty is the Vortec® 6.0-liter V8 CNG/LPG-capable engine, which makes 341 hp and 373 lb-ft of torque when running on gasoline (which is the standard – the gas fuel system needs to be added by a third-party upfitter).

Finally, there is a 2.8-liter Duramax® turbo-diesel four-cylinder, which offers 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The new Express Cargo doesn’t list fuel economy figures on the Chevrolet website, nor is its fuel economy available on the US Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy website. What it does say, though, is that the Express Cargo is equipped with a 31-gallon fuel tank for a long gap between gas station stops, regardless of powertrain.
