The Chevy Equinox will be lighter and also offered with more engines for its 2018 model year

Today Chevrolet took advantage of the autumnal equinox to introduce the all-new 2018 Chevy Equinox. The automaker also announced that the compact SUV would go on sale in North America in the first quarter of 2017, before going on sale in China later that year.

Eventually, 115 markets will end up selling the Equinox, which is second only to the Silverado as Chevy’s best-selling vehicle globally, having racked up 2 million sales since its launch.

“We’ve got the strongest truck business in the industry and we’ve reinvigorated our car lineup with vehicles like Cruze and Malibu XL,” said Global Chevrolet President Alan Batey. “We’re applying the same customer focus to grow our crossover/SUV business—starting with the Chevrolet Equinox.”

The bowtie brand’s global approach to building the new Equinox begins with the vehicle’s design, which echoes the global Chevrolet design cues seen on models like the all-new Cruze and Malibu XL.

“Customers who previewed the vehicle early on had a strong emotional response to the sleek and sophisticated exterior design,” said John Cafaro, executive director of GM Design. “Those same themes are carried through to the interior, making the space beautifully intuitive.”

Customers also have more powertrain options than before with the 2018 Chevy Equinox, with the ability to pick between a 1.5-liter turbo, 2.0-liter turbo, and 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine—at least in America. GM has not yet revealed what powertrain options will be offered in the Chinese market.

“With three choices, customers can select an engine that offers more of the attributes that are important to them: efficiency, performance and capability,” said Dan Nicholson, vice-president of Global Propulsion Systems. “The advantage for each is power of a larger engine and the efficiency of a smaller engine.”

“It is an all-new SUV from the ground up and one that takes on the industry’s biggest competitors with a stronger architecture, greater efficiency and more technology,” said executive chief engineer Rick Spina. “And it looks great doing it.”
