Following up the Ford Super Duty’s victory in 2017, the new 2018 Ford F-150 this week was named the winner of the 2018 Motor Trend Truck of the Year award. This latest win gives the F-150 five Truck of the Year trophies from the experts at Motor Trend. This year’s panel was wowed by everything from the power of the F-150’s all-new 3.3-liter V6 and 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engines to the intelligence of its design to the latest available technologies.

“This year’s competition was fierce, but the vote was unanimous,” said Ed Loh, Motor Trend editor in chief. “The newly redesigned 2018 F-150 exceeded our expectations in every category—powertrain, performance, technology, and overall execution.”

In Motor Trend’s analysis of four iterations of the 2018 F-150, Loh found himself particularly impressed with the infotainment setup available in the 2018 Ford F-150 XL SuperCrew 4×2.

“I love the tiny screen that still gives you all the major features (except for navigation),” said Loh. “The backup camera works well and has a zoom feature that allowed me to connect a trailer with little help from the spotter. Everything works. Nothing is luxe. That’s the way it is supposed to be—functional.”

Another judge was impressed with the thoughtful design of the SuperCab: “Ford deserves a lot of credit for how the extended cab is designed. Unlike its rivals with B-pillars and normal opening doors, the nearly 180-degree-opening rear doors and flat load floor allow owners to maximize utility in the back, and make it easier for passengers to get in and out.”

The judges were impressed with aspects across the four offerings—consisting of the F-150 XL SuperCrew 4×2 with 3.3-liter V6, F-150 Lariat SuperCrew 4×4 with 2.7-liter EcoBoost, F-150 Platinum SuperCrew 4×4 with 5.0-liter V8, and 2017 F-150 Raptor SuperCab. The decision was a unanimous one, with the F-150 besting the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Crew Cab and GMC Sierra Denali 3500HD with ease.

“It was a pretty resounding win,” road test editor Chris Walton said. “Nothing really came close.”
