What’s New for the 2018 Ford Mustang?

The Mustang is rolling into 2018 new and improved. While its exterior is iconic, it received a few upgrades including three additional colors (Orange Fury, Kona Blue, and Royal Crimson) and updated front and rear designs. The grille was tweaked to give it a more aggressive look while improving aerodynamics and functionality.

This year’s Mustang is the first to include Ford’s new 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford has dropped the base V6 engine on the Mustang, replacing it with an EcoBoost four-cylinder. The GT powertrain received an upgrade for 2018; while last year’s model offered a similar V8, the new one produces 460 horsepower, compared to last year’s 435-horsepower V8. However, the new Mustang comes with the industry-first Quiet Start mode so you can start your engine without disturbing sleeping neighbors.

Performance under the hood of the 2018 Mustang is divided into three categories: EcoBoost, GT, and Shelby.

The EcoBoost models are equipped with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost GTDI four-cylinder engine. On these models, you can choose between a six-speed manual transmission and the all-new 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. Regardless of your transmission choice, the EcoBoost produces 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque.

GT models come with a larger, 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8 engine. Again, you can choose the six-speed manual or 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmissions, depend on your preference. These four models produce 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.

The high-performance Shelby models come with a 5.2-liter Flat Plane Crank V8 engine and a TREMEC six-speed manual transmission. This model is not available with an automatic transmission. Overall, the powertrain produces 526 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque.

Of course, the cabin of the Mustang is built to match its tough exterior – but most of its luxury materials are saved for the upper Shelby models. The Shelby GT350 comes with RECARO cloth and Miko suede sport seats and an Alcantara leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Shelby GT350R upgrades its materials by adding red accent trim to the cabin. The 2018 Mustang also comes with Ford’s brand new Quiet Start function to help you avoid disrupting your neighbors during pre- or post-business hours.
