What’s New for the 2018 Hyundai Elantra?

Considering the Hyundai Elantra went through a redesign and entered its sixth generation not too long ago, much of this year’s model is a carryover. The biggest item of note is the introduction of the new SEL trim, which is essentially the Popular Equipment Package as its own trim. This standardizes many of the digital and infotainment items that were previously optional-only for lower tier versions of the Elantra. The rest of the trims get minor additions, such as the Limited’s black accents and auto-dimming rearview mirror, the Sport’s standard power sunroof, and the overall addition of a Machine Grey body color.

The 2018 Hyundai Elantra is available in six trims: SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, Sport, and Limited. All trims are offered in standard FWD.

2018 Hyundai Elantra Exterior

The 2018 Elantra bears the hexagonal grille that Hyundai has been infusing across its lineup; its shape widens the fascia and gives the sedan a less-poised, more laid-back appearance, echoing the premium confidence the Sonata has. The compact vehicle stretches 179.9 inches in total length, with a 106.3-inch wheelbase. Its width sits at 70.9 inches and its height reaches 56.5 inches. Four of the eight available body colors for the 2018 Elantra include white, beige, red, and Lakeside Blue.

2018 Hyundai Elantra Performance

For being a small sedan, the Elantra offers a variety of engine options, each with its own combination of power and efficiency. SE, SEL, Value, and Limited models get the basic 2.0-liter DOHC 16-Valve Inline four-cylinder with D-CVVT paired to a six-speed manual transmission and capable of 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. Also available is a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC and Active ECO System. The ECO version gets its own motor: a 1.4-liter DHOC 16-Valve Hydraulic Lash Adjust Turbocharged Inline four-cylinder with GDI. Guided by a seven-speed EcoShift® Dual Clutch Transmission with SHIFTRONIC, it earns 128 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque. The Sport ups the ante with its own athletic block: a 1.6-liter DHOC 16-Valve Turbocharged Inline four-cylinder with D-CVVT & GDI capable of 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.

2018 Hyundai Elantra Efficiency

The 2018 Elantra is a fitting choice if you value efficiency without paying a lot for it. The standard 2.0-liter engine doesn’t disappoint, mustering an EPA-estimated 28/37/32 mpg city/highway/combined (manual) or 29/38/33 mpg city/highway/combined (automatic). The ECO’s 1.4-liter lives up to its name with 40 mpg average on the highway and 35 mpg combined. The Sport’s 1.6-liter gives a kick at 22/30/25 mpg with manual transmission or 26/33/29 mpg with automatic.
